How to Choose the AI Tools You Actually Need
Everything I've got on this, in one place. Start at the top if you're new to it.
Short answer, before the detail: you start with one tool, Claude, and you add another only when you hit a specific wall you can actually feel. Most people do the opposite. They buy a stack of ten tools on day one, use two, and quietly resent the other eight. This page is how to not do that: how to tell which wall you’re at, and what solves it.

The one rule: add at the wall, not before
The single most useful thing I can tell you about AI tools is this: the right number to start with is one. The whole industry is built to sell you the opposite, which is why every listicle hands you fifty options the author has barely touched. You don’t need a shopping list. You need a method for adding one tool at a time, for a reason.
Start with Claude and nothing else. It’s the brain: you build, write, name things, and get unstuck by talking to it, and it’s what I used to build this whole site without knowing how to code. That “something” is your first wall, and the wall itself tells you which tool to add next.
The walls, and how to know you’ve hit one
You don’t shop for tools by category. You wait until a specific job is blocking you, then get the one tool that unblocks it. Here are the walls, the signal for each, and where the honest review lives for when you actually get there.

Notice what’s missing: a tool for every job you might someday have. If you haven’t hit the wall, you don’t need the tool yet. That’s the whole discipline.
Free or paid: one simple rule
Start free everywhere you can. Claude, ElevenLabs, vidIQ, and Canva all have real free tiers you can do genuine work on. Pay only when you hit a limit you can feel, never because a pricing page told you the “Pro” plan is what serious people buy.

Start free, every time. The free tier of a good AI is enough to build your first real thing. Pay when a limit is genuinely in your way, not because a paid plan looks more serious. The paid tier is a professional-volume number, not the price of admission.
When you have hit a wall doing something by hand, more than once, and you can name exactly what the tool would fix. If you cannot name the wall, you do not need the tool yet. That rule alone will save you more money than any comparison list.
