ElevenLabs Review: The AI Voice, Honestly

ElevenLabs is the AI voice on every video I make. I type a script, it reads it back in a real-sounding human voice, and that's the narration. No microphone, no recording, no "let me do that take again." For somebody building content who doesn't want to be on the mic, it's close to magic. Here's the honest review.

What it actually does
You give it text, it gives you audio in a natural voice. That's the core. The thing that makes it stand out from older text-to-speech is that it doesn't sound like a robot reading a phone menu. It has pacing, emphasis, breath. People genuinely don't clock that my narration is AI until I tell them.
People don't clock that my narration is AI until I tell them.
You can pick from a big library of voices, and you can even make a custom one. For my channel I picked a voice, locked it in, and now every episode sounds consistent.
What I use it for
The narration on every Some Guy & AI video. I write the script last, after the build is done, then run it through ElevenLabs and drop it into the edit. That's the whole workflow. It's the single reason I can make produced, narrated videos as a guy who does not want to record his own voice.
The honest catch
Two things. One, the very best quality and the bulk usage live on the paid tiers, so once you're making real volume you'll be paying. For me it's worth it, but it's not free forever. Two, it's so easy that you can get lazy with the script and let a flat read slip through. The voice is only as good as what you feed it. Good script in, great narration out.
There's a free tier to try it, which is exactly how you should start. Run a real script through it and listen.
Who it's for
- Anyone making videos, faceless or not, who doesn't want to be on the mic.
- Course creators, explainer videos, audio versions of posts.
- People who, like me, just narrate better in writing than out loud.
Who it's not for: if you love being on camera and on the mic, you don't need this. Your own voice is free and great.
Verdict
For making narrated content without recording, ElevenLabs is the best I've used and it's not close. It's a core part of my kit. Start on the free tier, run a real script through it, and you'll know within five minutes whether it's for you.
More honest takes on the tools I actually use, including vidIQ for YouTube. And if you want to see ElevenLabs in action, it's narrating my Episode 1 build.
FAQ
Is ElevenLabs worth it?
If you make videos and don't want to record your own voice, yes. It is the best AI voice I have used, and it is the reason I can make narrated videos without a microphone. Start on the free tier.
Does ElevenLabs have a free plan?
Yes, a real free tier to try it. The paid tiers add more usage and the top quality once you are making real volume, but free is the right place to start.
Does the AI voice sound robotic?
Not anymore. It has pacing, emphasis, and breath. People genuinely don't notice my narration is AI until I tell them. The voice is only as good as the script you feed it, though.
